A sublime study of the character of Christ as displayed in His life. "The eye of God had more to fill it in the life of Jesus, than it would have had in an eternity of Adam's innocency." (pages 47-48) This book is worthy of wide distribution and reflective re-reading.

Young Christians Calendar

“And Moses said, Let no man leave of it until the morning. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank” (Exodus 16:19-20).

The manna was the food that the Lord had provided for the Israelites, and it was good food that nourished their bodies perfectly. They lived on that manna for forty years. Yet if they kept some of it overnight until the next day, they could not eat it, for it “bred worms and stank.” They were not allowed to “eat leftovers!” Why not?

As we saw yesterday, the manna speaks of Christ as our spiritual food, and just as it was important for the Israelites to gather the manna every day, so it is important for us to feed on Christ through God’s Word every day. To be practical about it, we cannot read two chapters of the Bible today and then forget to read it tomorrow. We must read it every day. We know this is the same even in natural things. We cannot eat twice as much breakfast today and then skip breakfast tomorrow. We must eat it daily, and we need to feed on God’s Word daily too.

However, there was one day in the week when they could keep manna until the next day. We will see tomorrow why this happened.

Growing in Grace
“Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die” (1 Corinthians 15:32).
In our verse today, the Apostle Paul quotes a saying that has been common in this world for hundreds of years. When people see the condition of this world becoming worse, or perhaps are involved in a war, or some other big disaster, it is tempting to them to live for the present, enjoy what they can in this life, and not worry about the future. After all, they say, Are we not all going to die someday? And when things are going badly, perhaps we will die sooner than we would normally expect.
In one sense it is not good to worry about our future in this world, for if we know the Lord, He is going to look after us. But it is a serious thing when men and women are careless about where they are going when they leave this world. Satan tempts them to “live for the present,” and not to be concerned about what happens after death. All around us we can see those who are spending their time, money, and energy on things in this world, while not giving any thought about what will happen when they have to leave this world. Those who live like this sometimes persuade themselves that there is nothing beyond death, and that death is the end of everything for them. But the Bible clearly tells us that judgment comes after death, and it is a very serious thing to forget this.
Even as Christians, what we do in this life will have consequences, for if we live for the Lord, He will give us a reward. But if we live for this world, we will experience loss in eternity, even though we are saved and go to be with Christ when we leave this world.
How much better it is to use our time, energy, and money for the Lord, and to eat and drink only what is necessary for our bodies. Yes, God does give us many good things in this world, and we are thankful for them. But let us not be so taken up with these things that we forget about eternal matters!

Consider how great things he hath done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24)
Thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. … Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee.1
I know, O Lord, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. … It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. … Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.2 – The Lord hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.3 – He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. … He knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.4

Comfort of the Scriptures
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Heb. 12:2).
Perhaps no statement of Scripture gives a clearer summary of how the believer may live a victorious and joyful Christian life, than that found in the words, “Looking unto Jesus.” The words carry the thought of looking away from all else and centering our attention and affection on Him, as He is seated “at the right hand of the throne of God.” We are to look away from ourselves, both our failures and successes; we are to look away from men, however godly they may be, and look only to Him. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.” Just as He tells us to “look unto Me, and be ye saved,” so as saved ones we are to be constantly “looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith,” and “consider Him ... lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.” For “the Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: Thou maintainest my lot. ... I have set the Lord always before me: because He is at my right hand, I shall not be moved,” always remembering that “He faileth not.”
I look away from my heart so fickle,
And away from men whose lives do fail;
I look to my Savior seated in glory,
Who beareth my name within the veil.
